Place of Origin: China
Packaging: Bulk liquid
1, Product Characteristics:
(1) Properties Description: Diacetone alcohol is a white or slightly yellow transparent liquid with an aromatic odor. It is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and chloroform. It is unstable, decomposing when it reacts with bases or distills under normal pressure. Long-term storage at room temperature can cause polymerization.
(2) Toxicity: Diacetone alcohol is low in toxicity, but ingestion is strictly prohibited. Operators should wear protective gear.
(3) Chemical Properties: Diacetone alcohol contains both a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group, exhibiting the chemical properties of both a ketone and a tertiary alcohol. It decomposes into two molecules of acetone when reacting with bases or heated above 130°C. When heated with sulfuric acid or trace iodine, it dehydrates to form mesityl oxide. It reacts with sodium hypobromite to form 2-hydroxyisovaleric acid and undergoes catalytic hydrogenation to produce 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol.
(4) Health Hazards: Diacetone alcohol is an irritant to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. It can enter the body through inhalation or ingestion, affecting the nervous system and damaging the liver and stomach. Inhalation of high concentrations of its vapor can cause pulmonary edema and even coma. Prolonged exposure can lead to dermatitis.
(5) Occurrence: Diacetone alcohol is found in tobacco leaf, burley leaf, oriental leaf, and tobacco smoke.
2, Product Applications:
(1) Chemical Intermediate: Diacetone alcohol is an intermediate in the production of mesityl oxide, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl isobutyl carbinol, hexylene glycol, phorone, and isophorone from acetone. It is also used to make metal cleaners, wood preservatives, photographic films, pharmaceutical preservatives, antifreeze, hydraulic fluid solvents, extractants, and textile finishing agents. Diacetone alcohol is widely used as a solvent for electrostatic spraying, cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, fats, oils, waxes, and resins. It is a high-boiling-point organic solvent with low viscosity, and its viscosity is minimally affected by temperature. It serves as a solvent and paint remover in cellulose ester paints, printing inks, and synthetic resin coatings.
(2) Solvent: Diacetone alcohol is used extensively as a solvent for resins, electrostatic sprays, cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, fats, oils, waxes, and resins. It is also utilized in the preparation of metal cleaners, wood preservatives, photographic films, pharmaceutical preservatives, antifreeze, hydraulic fluid solvents, extractants, and textile finishing agents. It is an intermediate in organic synthesis.
(3) Cosmetic Solvent: Diacetone alcohol is used as a high-boiling-point solvent in cosmetics, primarily in nail polish. It is usually mixed with low and medium-boiling-point solvents to achieve the desired evaporation rate and viscosity.
